Troubleshoot Online Store Issue - first steps

When you encounter errors on your site in order to quickly find a fix, it's important determine whether the issue is related to the original theme code or other modifications, such as custom code changes or installed apps.

Here are some steps that you can take to diagnose the root cause of the problem:

  1. Download a fresh copy of the theme from the Shopify Theme Store

Start by downloading a fresh copy of the theme from the Shopify Theme Store by accessing the store from your Shopify account and selecting "Add latest theme version" when you find the theme you've already purchased.

Test the functionalities in this clean version of the theme to see if the problem persists.

  1. Check if the issue occurs with a Shopify free theme

After noticing the error on your theme, switch to one of Shopify’s default themes (e.g., "Dawn"). If the issue persists, it means the problem is not theme related but may instead stem from settings in your Shopify admin.

  1. Test the theme demo online store

If you have an issue with a specific page or section, please check the same functionality in the demo store to check how it works in the original theme here.

  1. Disable installed apps

Some apps may interfere with the theme’s code and cause conflicts. Temporarily disable the installed apps and check if the issue disappears. If it does, enable the apps one by one to identify which app is causing the issue.

  1. Check custom code modifications - roll back to the original theme code

If you have made modifications to the theme’s code, review them to ensure they are not interfering with the theme’s functionality. If you're unsure which modifications might be causing the issue, try rolling back to a previous version of the code to see if the error disappears. Shopify allows you to view the original code for each theme file (except those in the assets folder). For more information, refer to this screenshot and the official Shopify documentation.

  1. Test on different browsers and devices

Sometimes, an issue may only appear on specific browsers or devices. Test the site on multiple browsers and devices to ensure that the issue is not related to compatibility.

Important - update your theme regularly!

It is very important to keep your theme updated to the latest version to ensure compatibility and access to the newest features. Please update your theme by following the instructions in the Shopify documentation.

If you have custom changes in your theme code and you are looking for an app to easily transfer your customisations in the new theme version, please see this article from our theme documentation for detailed info about the Theme Updater App: Theme Updater Plus.
